Today I decided to go see the 12:25 PM showing of District 9. For those who don’t know, my current sleep schedule is something like 4AM till I wake up but usually somewhere between 11 am and noon. However that seems to be changing as my kitten wants me to have a ‘normal’ schedule, at least when she thinks its time to eat.

So after she had gotten me up, I decided I was going to go see this movie, with really having only seen a few twitter messages about it, and I believe a trailer for it when I went to go see Star Trek District 9.

Why this pre-amble? Well I wasn’t really fully awake when the movie started. [UPDATE: And apparently I wasn't all that awake when I wrote the review either, Star Trek wasn't even out yet]

For the first 30 minutes, I was desperately trying to keep myself up, the thought of leaving the theatre had actually crossed my mind because I was finding myself wanting to go to sleep.

Then they get out to the camp where the aliens have been set aside to live, to evict them. This part of the movie I call “Lets realistically portray how stupid humans really are.”  If you look at a lot of our fiction, and its clear that unless you come to us with guns blazing, we are going to treat you like a 9th world country.

To the human race’s benefit, we didn’t force them to learn English, and the people who worked with them, was able to understand their native language, and the aliens were able to understand the humans who spoke English anyways.

The only thing I wish they had explained more, is “what was in the fuel?” I won’t spoil the movie, but if you have seen it I’m sure you know why I ask.

Once the main human star of the movie, is hit with the chemical he begins to change, and then fight the humans.

As with many other reviews I’ve read of this movie, I’d say go see it in the theatre.

As you may have heard, I have been working on fiction for quite a while. I finally have one that I’m wanting to bring out to the public.

Its not fully finished yet, so I will be releasing it as I’m working on it.  This is borrowed from how Mur Lafferty released her book Heaven.

I will also be borrowing features from the likes of Phil Rossi (and others) who pre-released stories in his book’s world. This will be released on September August 1st 2009. More information is available at my new fiction blog.

So this past weekend (Black Friday Weekend) I was at LosCon 35. And overall I have to say it was much better than my first experience there, which was LosCon 34.

Some interesting points I picked up:

  • Science Fiction commonly doesn’t stay on TV, because TV networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) will only air Sci Fi that has been produced in such a way that the “average” person can get it. However the “average” person won’t like it because its Sci Fi, and the Sci Fi people won’t like it because its been to generalized, for the “average” person.
  • Wil Wheaton (yes I can say I actually met him) doesn’t like for one person to ask to many questions, “Sorry can you repeat that, I tuned you out there for a second.”
  • While Larry Niven may not understand being an author in the world of New Media (as far as I can tell, he doesn’t even have a website that is actually his) I do have to give him special Kudos for eating his breakfast Sunday morning somewhere that anyone could come up and ask him questions.
  • Larry Niven looks very much in Real Life as he did when he visited Second Life once.

After I managed to get this it occurred to me, that I should have also asked D.C. Fontana and David Gerrold for their autographs on the same piece of paper also. Regrettably, I didn’t see either of them, after I got Wil’s autograph:

Autograph of Wil Wheaton
