A few weeks ago I listened to an episode of StarShip Sofa, where they did a review of the story Ender’s Game recently. Their review of the book made me want to read it so much, even with all the spoilers, that I decided to borrow a copy so I could read it.
What an amazing story this is. While the book says its for children 10 and up, it does have some very mature themes in it. I’m not sure how well I would have handled all of the stuff it talks about at that young of an age.
However, with Ender’s feelings of always being controlled, that he had few if any choices that were really his to make, this probably is how a lot of young adolescents see their life.
A friend of mine, informed me that a few times they have approached the author, Oscar Scott Card, about making a movie of this film. In some ways I hope they never do make it a movie, because at least the American controlled movie industry would have to tame down this book so much I think that it would bare little resemblence to the original.
For instance, in this book, while it doesn’t go into huge detail about it the book does say that the slightly co-ed Battle School nudity isn’t something to be shocked at seeing. Also, I don’t see them doing a good job in converting Ender’s fight with Bonzo well, probably would be just mentioned.
Anyways, if you haven’t read this book, I would recommend it. If you have, perhaps its worth reading again. I know I’m looking forward to seeing if the library has the follow up books.
